Cicada Lights

Sunday 3rd May
Queens Park, Warwick

A breathtaking evening event held alongside the Condamine River incorporating giant lanterns, art, dance, songs and performance; involving up to 300 performers.

“Cicada Dreaming” and the Lantern Parade, two popular components of the 2007 festival, are the inspiration for the development of a major community performance event.

Multi-media art event facilitators “Community Rites” and indigenous performer Sharman Parsons, will develop a giant community performance to be held under the stars along the banks of the Condamine River.

The event will feature:
  • Welcome Walkway with depiction of local animal totems and historical displays representing the settlement of some of the early families to the area.
  • Cicada Dance by Sharman Parsons. A welcome message from the Cicada relating to our connection with the land and the need to care for it. Accompanied by narration by Rosalie Kunoth Monks and didgeridoo by Matthew Doyle.
  • As part of Cicada Dance, two (male & female) lantern processions led by large lantern images will converge, singing and drumming, then place the lanterns at the performance area.
  • Performances by community groups depicting aspects of Warwick – music, dance gymnasts and horses!
  • Community camp fires will be highlighted during the performance as groups offer a cameo performance representing different cultures or community groups.
  • Children’s Lantern and Firefly Parade - a short circuit where children who have created lanterns in workshops or for little ones dressed as Fireflies can participate.
  • Lighting of the Fire Rope Drawing – the spectacular finale!
